How To Repair A Broken Refrigerator Seal

Posted on: 12 January 2022

The seal around the door to your refrigerator may seem like an insignificant part of the appliance, but it's really one of the most important parts of the appliance. If the seal is broken, it can allow exterior air to get inside, which may cause too much warmth to get into the refrigerator. This warmer air will leave your food warm as well and you could be eating food that is not the proper temperature, which can make you ill. If the seal around your door is damaged in any way, you need to have it replaced. Read on for information on how to test your refrigerator door seal and how to replace it.

How To Test Your Door Seal

First, if you can see that your door seal is cracked, broken, or in need of repair just from visually looking at it, you need to have it replaced. Inspect it for dry-rotting, cracks, and other signs of wear and tear. If you don't see anything visually wrong with it, but your food in your refrigerator seems to be too warm, you can test the seal by placing a piece of paper inside the door and closing it. If you can easily pull the piece of paper out, the seal is not working properly and should be replaced. If you aren't able to pull out the piece of paper without it tearing, or using a lot of force, the seal is more than likely in good shape.

How To Replace The Door Seal

Replacing the door seal is going to take some tools such as a screwdriver and a scraper to remove any old pieces of seal that may remain on the door frame. You need to remove the old seal by taking out the screws holding it in place. Then clean around the door where the old seal once was. You want a nice clean surface where the new seal will be installed. Make sure you have the proper seal for your refrigerator type, then using the new screws that came with the package, install the new seal according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once in place, test the seal by using a piece of paper in the door again. The seal should hold the paper tightly in place.

If your refrigerator door seal is broken, your food in the refrigerator may not be as cold as it should and you could be eating food that is not safe for consumption. Replace the seal on your door yourself, or hire a professional to do this job for you.
